We helped a Construction Company Build an Excel Dashboard to Summaries Engineering Data
The Client
The client is a leading Construction Company. Client offers infrastructure projects, Construction of Buildings and factories etc. A perpetual inspection schedule requires each critical component on each structure to be assessed for safe operation every year. The vast amounts of safety data created are subsequently used to plan future structure repairs and predict future component failures
Business Problem
Data collected from inspections could be extracted from an existing database in the form of multiple excel spreadsheets. These reports could only be generated by staff with the necessary Excel skills and did not provide a suitable means of being able to easily analyze this data and present the output in a concise way. This meant that the extensive data that was available was not being used widely across the business to inform decisions over targeting critical future workload.
Our Solution
A data entry spreadsheet was designed to make data inputting efficient. This also incorporated automatic data quality checks to highlight any errors in the data, ensuring that data errors could be identified and corrected before the data was finally posted to a data table. The engineering calculations required to assess the overall and critical conditions of each component were built into the spreadsheet in the form of Excel functions and calculated automatically. A series of dashboards were then built to show the overall condition of each structure. The dashboards were arranged in a hierarchy. The top level showed a summary of performance for the whole region, whilst lower level reports enabled the user to drill down into more detailed data at the click of a button. A navigation tool was included to allow the user to efficiently move around the numerous reports and charts.
Business Benefits
- Client is now able to extract and summaries data from their large database quickly and flexibly without having to re-build the reports each time they are required. This has not only saved significant amounts of time that were previously spent analyzing the data, but also provides a greater amount of time to create future work plans and to budget for these with greater confidence.
- This tool helps to the client to take better decisions and to evaluate more options quickly and effectively.
